Angeline Boulley is not an Indie Author, but she is most definitely part of a vastly underrepresented community. My community. Ms. Boulley is an Ojibwe woman from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which you can learn more about on her website. Having finally read her book, Firekeeper's Daughter, I now truly feel represented in the written word. I'd never felt that before until she began describing the appearance of her main character, a white-passing Anishnabe woman, and the culture and teachings that I also grew up with. Reading her book and seeing this vibrant community in print, with characters so like my aunties and cousins, it was an emotional rollercoaster. Continuing in the same community, Ms. Boulley has recently released Warrior Girl Unearthed which I will be reading as soon as I've recovered from the damage done by the first book.
